December 9, 2005
By Mike Dobson, Music Supervisor

When the wedding show was scripted we had time to think about what we wanted to achieve musically for this very special couple. Michael and Lauren have a certain maturity and class that lends itself to hearing something truly original and inspiring for their wedding procession.

Jack Smith, Edward Scott and Kathy Foster expressed a strong desire to create a musical procession that would entice every newly engaged woman in our audience to want this song as their own. So needless to say... the stakes were high; however, like most of my experiences with "The Young and the Restless," when we all put our heads together, things just magically happen. Somehow, it all works out!

The first step was finding an artist who would carry the moment for the perfect wedding song.

The producers wanted something with a classical feel but not like the common traditional marches. As in all weddings and ceremonial gatherings, the trumpet typically carries the classical sound. As simple as this sounds, we began by searching for a trumpet player who might have that element of contemporary jazz sophistication and a touch of the classics.

We found Chris Botti, and we found a lot more than expected. This guy is amazing and his resume includes works with Bob Dylan, Sting, Paul Simon, Aretha Franklin, Paula Cole and a long list of other music giants. He released his first album in 1995, and I think he’s got a total of five solo albums to his credit. He is originally from Oregon and let’s face it... he’s great looking and perfect for our show. His last album, "When I Fall In Love" peaked at #1 on Billboard’s Top Jazz charts in 2004, and when we met him, he was poised to launch his current album, "To Love Again- The Duets." This new album is a variety of "duets" with Chris’ signature style of trumpeting along side some of the biggest names on today’s music scene.

The best part of Chris Botti was that he was available and interested in helping us find that perfect wedding procession. He actually flew into Los Angeles to meet with us to share ideas and play what he had in mind as the perfect song, "Emmanuel." A song once recorded by Branford Marsalis, composed by the late Michele Colombier, "Emmanuel" has a beautiful melody that evokes immediate emotion. When he played it to us in our control room we were asked to imagine it with strings and guitar, a bit faster, and with an uplifting performance. We all looked at each other and thought, "Are you kidding? WE LOVE IT!"...AND WE HOPE YOU DO TOO!

HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYONE!

I just wanted to say that you guys could not have been more on key with your decision for Chris Botti to play for the weddings scene. He makes beautiful music, and aside from that he is a beautiful person inside and out! Those of us who hold him dear, over at the message boards on www.chrisbotti.com thank you so much for having him on your show. We cannot stop talking about his performance! In fact, the song is playing nonstop on my computer as we speak. Again, wonderful job on finding the perfect person to play for the wedding scene. If you ever get the chance, please try and catch him playing live, it is an experience you will never forget!

This wedding will go down in the history books as one of the most beautiful and moving of all. I must admit, I have never heard of Chris Botti until this, but you can be sure I will be looking into his CD now. Congratulations for a well done wedding, and thank you for not letting Sheila or Tom ruin it for us...we have waited too long for this!

oh my THE BEST I'm ready to purchase Chris's CD What a great find for the show and for fans! Thanks to all

What a lovely picture of the "Baldwins"! I enjoyed Chris' trumpet playing instead of the traditional wedding march. It really set a mood for the wedding, and it was great!

I am looking forward to the new year. I am sure that Y&R has a bunch of entertaining storylines ahead for the viewers. With that being said, I can hardly wait until you guys cast the new "Lily"! I am missing "Daily" (daniel and lily) sooo much! Most of their storyline revolved around the accident and we only got glimpses of how sweet and romantic this couple is! I would like to see more, and I know for a fact that there is a sizeable fanbase that would like to see Daily back in each other's arms. :)
Michael Graziadei is a superb actor...Romeo needs his Juliet back!

Hey! That guy was good. Really, he was, but I want to hear Thad (J.T.) sing more! I can NOT get enough of him!!! God bless him always!!!

Posted by: Holly at December 11, 2005 1:36 PM

I just adding my voice in congratulating the golden couple, (Michael & Lauren) guys you look great together.

Posted by: Sandy at December 12, 2005 5:56 AM

Sorry this is off topic but I have to agree with the poster Sarah. I cant wait till Lily is recast so that we can have our "Daily" back! Daniel and Lily need a chance to have time together to be young and have fun and just be happy for more than 5 minutes!!! And Michael Graziadei is such a wonderful actor. Daniel just needs something good in his life!

Can u tell me how I might watch Y&R on my computer? I can't keep missing days of work to catch my favorite soap. PS I loved the episode I stayed home for with Chris Botti.
And.... I guess I'd better say this while I have the chance. Sharon Case...I love you!

I personally prefer Classical Music and Vows in the old-fashioned Language for a Wedding, but I must admit that Mr. Botti's Processional Music was rather good, not exactly what I would have expected from a Jazz Trumpeter, though what we heard from him at the Reception was, of Course, more Jazz-oriented. I also had never heard of him until he was being promoted for this Wedding. If one wishes to write one's own Vows, than those at this Wedding, while not covering the usual Ground expected in such Vows (though they did somewhat make these when exchanging Rings) were also rather moving. Overall it was a nice Wedding, and I join others in being thankful that there were no major Disruptions, those to come later.

In the episode of the wedding when Nick & Phyills
first got to the wedding they were talking and went up to the bar to get a drink, I was wonder-ing if the bartender was Tom Cruse? It sure look-ed a lot like him to me.

Hey other Y & R and Chris Botti fans. The trumpet solo for the weddidng scene blew me away. I am getting married next week and have been searching the internet and stores for one of Chris' albums with "Emmanuel" on it.

Please, somebody, help me find it. Time is running out.

Oh man I don;t even care about the music! okie so it was good but shoot lauren and micheal are too hot!! lol!! im even dreaming about them these days.. .ahahah i really need to get a life... i hope they're reunited soon.

i dont know if i was feeling Tracey's...oops, Lauren's mermaid dress. The rest of the dress was fine, but erm, looked a little hard to walk in. and when i first saw the hair i was like what the frack but i got used to it.

I love the Y@R soaps. I think that Michael and Lauren are meant for each other, and Shellia shouldn't try to interfere with that.

Posted by: Della2005 at December 26, 2005 3:11 PM

Attention JV among others: I've had the pleasure to work with Chris Botti, and Y&R could not have made a better choice. He is such a wonderful person and very amiable. That's one thing that many who are not familiar with Smooth Jazz artists will find - they are extremely friendly and willing to meet the public. Can't say that about too many other formats of music.

I highly recommend Chris' music to the Y&R viewers, and if you have the chance to see him in concert, DO IT! It will make for a very romantic evening!

I cried today b/c Lauren didn't die and she and Michael can and I hope live in total heaven!!(On the show)

I thought this thread was the best to post this 'new' M/L storyline comment.

Yesterday, I watched the scene(s) where Michael breaks down in the chapel to the end when he sees Lauren for the first time.

Christian LeBlanc is AMAZING and just that scene ALONE should have everyone on their feet and clapping at the Emmys.

What an incredible performance.

Christian is definitely a man full of soul and defines the difference between good and GREAT.

I am completely gobsmacked!

Bravo,

Kim

Wow.. I meant to comment on Lauren and Michael's
wedding earlier. Y and R you really out-did yourselves this time. Everything was exquisite!
I have actually met Chris Botti and seen his concerts several times. What a perfect choice.
His new CD, "To Love Again-The Duets", is excellent, and I'm sure the show promoted sales immensely! Thank you Y and R !!

Hi i really loved the song you played a couple of months ago when daniel and lily ran away and they were on the beach. I can't find what it is anywhere, Would you be able to tell me the name of it?

Posted by: Christina at January 14, 2006 8:51 AM

I Love Mr. Botti's music. I have never heard of him before I seen him on Y & R. Mr. Botti's music he played on Y & R was very romantic.

If I ever get married I want to have someone perform Emmanuel at the wedding or have Chris perform it himself. That song is still in my mind.

Patti:

You mentioned in your message that you were listening to the music played by Botti at Michael and Loren's wedding. I quote, "In fact, the song is playing nonstop on my computer as we speak." I too love this song and would love to able to listen to it. How do I go about listening to his on my comoputer. I have searched high and low for this song and cannot find it. Please HELP!

I was blown away by the deliriously romantic song played by Chris Botti at Michael and Lauren's wedding.... I immediately knew that this is the song I want at my own future wedding... I set about trying to find the CD to buy...And was devastated to learn that there isn't one!!!!! I had the wedding on VHS tape, but didn't save it because I thought I could buy the CD!! Please tell me that Chris Botti is planning to record this!... There is also no recording by Branford Marsalis to buy either!.. Can you help?
