Mike Dobson here reporting on the behind-the-scenes mix of "Y&R"!
Thanks for watching the show! We are one of the only daytime dramas that actually uses original recordings with full orchestra. If you listen closely, you'll probably notice.
Here's a little music riddle: Listen closely to the Daniel and Lily love cue we wrote about a month ago. It's starting to air these days, and you'll hear a couple different versions... sometimes just acoustic guitar and strings... sometimes electric guitar, you might even hear it coming out of the juke box once or twice in the coffee house...but what is it about the theme that sounds familiar? It's not obvious, as we don't want to copy directly from other great works of music, but let me give you a clue. Our supervising producer, Ed Scott, was inspired by the original music that was written in 1869, based on a famous Shakespeare story, by a Russian composer. Have I already said too much? Can you figure it out?
Lately, we've been really sad about Cassie's death. Her final scenes were heart wrenching to watch. If you watched her last days you might have noticed that we took an old theme of hers from when she was a child and rewrote a sad cue that carried a similar melody. And, then at the final end, we wanted to make the cry complete with a new rendition of the "Y&R" theme! We miss her!!
Anyway, I've been on the show for nine years now and I love it here. Each day I, along with our music coordinator Brian Harrison and associate director Jennifer Scott, work with a talented team of people to take a show with no sound effects and no music track and make it all come to life. In television production, the last audio mix session with picture is typically called a "sweetening session." It's when the audio levels, sound effects and music tracks are sweetened to broadcast standards so that when you watch the show it's not missing critical elements, and the experience is seamless and complete.
When I have more time, I'll give you some fun pieces about Thad Luckinbill. He's a great guy, and his off camera personality is exactly what he does on camera when he's being his good ol' J.T. self... just a happy dude who plays great guitar and sings completely naturally. Every time I hear him I'm amazed at how good he is. A quick insight to Thad would reveal that one of his favorite singer songwriters is Gavin DeGraw. He's performed two of Gavin's songs on the show, "Meaning" and "Follow Through." We love J.T.'s storyline; and we're in the works with a new song that Thad wrote himself!
Okay ... I gotta get back to work.
Best to you all.

Hey everyone at Y&R.... I have a question...can you please bring back the SOAP CLASSICS this upcoming year. I was devastated when they were taken away last year. Thanks, Chris

Mr. Dobson,
Y&R's music is always lovely and soothing.
Not only is Thad Luckinbill a pretty good actor, he also has musical talent. One question though, is he in his late 20's or early 30's? I just see him playing an older character closer to his "real" age and not w/ the teens on the show.

I don't really like the new Victoria. She just doesn't seem to fit the part. Also, the new Mac is not a good mate for JT. I was sad that Cassie is off the show. She was really great!!

I did not note the Simularity you mentioned, but, based on the Clues you gave us and if you do not mind me saying so here, you must have been speaking of Tchaikovsky's famous _Romeo_ _And_ _Juliet_ _Fantasy_ _Overture_ which, as those of you who know it will know, has a Love Theme which first appears, scored for English Horn and Strings (with _MAYBE_ Flute included as well), in D-Flat Major before, after the Capulets and Montagues do some more Fighting, it comes back, with full Orchestra, in D Major (I am an Enthusiast of so-called Classical Music, and have been criticized elsewhere for being too technical when discussing this. I hope you were able to indulge me here, further hoping that those who do not know this famous Music can come to know it! By the Bye, the Version which Tchaikovsky wrote of this Music in 1869 differs somewhat from his Revised Version almost exclusively played ToDay.)!
_AT_ _LAST_ Things seem to be heading in the right Direction as per getting this Teens-on-the-Run Saga resolved!!! As we heard ToDay, Master Romalotti now recalls what _REALLY_ happened that Night, and the Spoilers tell us of even better Things to come, though not without Tragedy. I trust many of us can agree that there may now be Cause for some Optimism!

Great guess..J.V. and the year is right too. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I've been exposed to classical a bit so maybe I'll recognize it when I hear it...then again! LOL.
The music played during Cassie's last days was VERY effective! Bravo! It evoked the sweet innocence of childhood and added to the tragedy that was in play. It very much reminded me of the haunting music heard during the opening of To Kill A Mockingbird.
Since the topic is music, I'm wondering whatever became of recording Victor and Nikki's 2002 Wedding song- The Prayer by Darlene Koldenhoven.
There was serious talk of it being recorded at the time. Did that ever come to fruition?
Posted by: kricketkat at July 5, 2005 7:08 PM
Poster Kricketkat, I am not exactly certain if that famous Love Theme occurs as we know it in Tchaikovsky's original 1869 Version, though I seem to _VAGUELY_ recall that it does. And by the Bye, I hope your Username reflects a liking for a certain _Y&R_ Character who, as I wrote elsewhere in this Forum, I feel has been unjustly maligned in recent Years, though not as much now as previously.
I also would now like to say that I was _MOST_ gratified at the Music Producer's Expression of Sadness over Miss Newman's Death as well as that of yet another Poster! At _VERY_ Least, this is one of the best Places on the Internet to vent concerning this Tragedy, and I remain _MOST_ grateful for that!!! _PLEASE_ just keep the Runaway Story going where it seems to be going, thus giving us a Consolation Prize of a Sort!!!
Mr. Luckinbill sings what he sings quite well, and he was indeed kind to me personally at Six Flags America the Summer before last! I hope more _Y&R_ Cast Members can appear there, or elsewhere in the Washington, D. C., Area, before long!!!

Is there any chance that some of Y&R's opening credits over the years could be displayed on this, or the official CBS website? I am sure lots of fans would love to take a trip down memory lane.

i think it is getting heated there is allot of drama going on and thats what we all like isnt it? i do not like the new victoria either i think that nick is acting like a spoiled brat,i also think that jt needs to go ahead and tell mac what is going on so that they can be together i think that they are so meant to be. sharion and brad need to just go ahead and do that thing i always thought that they eould be good together.
Posted by: rachelle at July 6, 2005 9:01 AM
JV - I think the reason that you feel Cricket was "maligned" is because they used to have her involved in like three or four different storylines at the same time. It did get a bit annoying. I will say that, now that they use her in one or two SL's at a time, I like her much better than I used to. Other than that, I enjoy reading your posts!
Posted by: Joe at July 6, 2005 9:49 AM
Thank you Mr. Dobson for that insider info. I really enjoy all the music showcased on the show and I think you and all involved do an amazing job. I am also amazed at how good Thad Luckinbill is and I always enjoy his performances; but I don't like his storyline at all, in fact, the only thing I do like about it is that he gets to sing alot more....maybe if he sung to someone other than Mackenzie I'd like it. Personally, I thought he sung with more feeling and emotion when he sung to Colleen; but that's just my opinion.

it's good to hear about the music of YR. i was wondering if there were any plans to create an all new soundtrack for YR which would include some of the new background music.
- I Do by scott bennett

Normally I would comment on the latest happenings on the show, but I would like to respond to some of the postings that I have read on Brad and Sharon.
I am deeply desterb about some of the things that I have heard. People saying that Brad and Sharon should be together. Even for a soap opera that would be as low as it gets during a tragedy like this. Do you just not have a soul or what. I know its a TV show but good god. Sharon does not need to be looking to Brad for the kind of comfort sharon needs. Its called adultry people. I know it has happened on the show before. But not here not now. Once upon a time, yes Sharon and Brad would have been good together. But that ship has sailed. Think of Nick and Noah and then tell me you think Brad and Sharon should be together. The day that happens is the day I stop watching.

I happen to really like that Y&R had been using more current popular music in their s/ls. If you visit any of the message boards, you'll find that fans spend quite a bit of time and effort on music videos of their favorite couples and scenes - it's a great connection!
As for Thad, most Thad fans would admit that anytime they can see and hear Thad sing on Y&R is a treat. But, I think you'd also find that most JT fans also find themselves cringing when he's singing to Mac, or Brit, or any other woman.
His singing and songwriting were a special connection between JT and Colleen, and I think many (myself included) would like to see that special part of JT stay sacred to his relationship with Colleen.

I just wanted to say that Thad's singing is amazing. I love to hear him (in fact, I have those specific clips of him singing downloaded onto my computer and I listen to him all the time!) But I agree with another poster, singing to Colleen was with so much more emotion than these last few pieces to nuMac. There isn't the chemistry between these two either. Here's one fan hoping that Lyndsy Fonseca returns and we can hear Thad sing to her again.
Posted by: MRSJ at July 7, 2005 9:57 AM
Hey! I love to hear Thad sing! I could listen to him all day and still not have enough of him!!! With me being such a fan of his singing, I don't mind listening to him sing to Mac, but I do prefer hearing him sing to Lyndsy/Colleen. I pray that she comes back to Y&R soon because her and Thad/J.T. belong together forever always!!!
By the way, is a CD from Thad still possible? I love to watch him act on Y&R, but in my opinion, he does not sing enough!!!
God bless him and Lyndsy always!!!

I think Y&R is doing great! With the storylines, music, actors/actresses, everything! I do have one question however--Scott Grainger, Lauren's son, will be joining the show soon. But also wasn't a doctor by the name of Scott Grainger the one who tried to help John Abbott's ex-wife Jessica?

Mike Dobson and team - you do a great job matching the music cues to the characters and story developments! It adds so much to the drama unfolding on screen. I have always enjoyed listening for the familiar character themes and once spent ages trying to find one haunting theme you used to play at poignant story moments - which turned out to be inspired by the Robin Hood and Marion soundtrack. I bought the Y & R music CD that was release a few years ago and still enjoy it. One other thing that has always impressed me is the way you find such appropriate music for the Emmy Outstanding Drama clips. I can never listen to the Karl Jenkins "Diamond Music" without remembering the great montage the show did a few years ago and it's dramatic musical accompaniment. A perfect match. Your creative work is appreciated!

Can Anyone tell me the song that played and who is the singer on the July 8 2005 Program when Lily and Daniel walked along the beach.
Posted by: Richard at July 9, 2005 8:23 AM
Mr. Dobson... grest work on the music. I've watched Y&R my whole life, and the music on this show is by FAR the best on daytime, alwayes has been. Please keep up the good work, I know budget cuts are a reality in daytime TV today, but please, don't compromise the quality of the background music... if need be, dip into those vaults for that 70's background music.. it was used well into the late 80's... and the slow version of "Sally's Theme" was used as late as last year (During Katherine's scenes), KUDOS for pulling that out of the vaults and using it. Here's an IDEA... maybe put up some of the background music pieces on ITunes or something... a little extra income for the show, and PLEASE include some for the really OLD OLD STUFF, as that slow version of "Sally's theme" never made it on the original soundtrack album in 1974. (BTW.. there are 3 versions of that song)KUDOS to the new arangement of the Y&R theme in Cassie's death scene,it's tradition for you guys to use the Y&R theme in poignant, watershed moments in the show's history, and this time you did not dissapoint. I sobbed for HOURS. One suggestion... upon Sheila's return... PLEASE dust off the "psycho" music cue you guys used years ago... I've not heard anything so chilling since, that music cue gives me the creeps every time. (Feel free to email me if your'e not sure what cue I'm talking about.. I'll email you the sound clip)

You have a cop as one of the extras, that I found out his name was Lance Jones. Talk about a hottie, he puts some of the regulars to shame. Why do you hide this young man. Can you imagine what he would look like with his shirt off. He is so handsome and would really be an asset to your cast. From what I hear he has talent you should see. He is a diamond, but not in the rough.

This is the first I have heard of this, and, if it is sufficiently serious, I would indeed wish to know further. Yet, whether serious or not, may she have a speedy Recovery!!!

Hello to Young and The Restless, Please tell me, why when you get a person who has been on the show for years that hold and behold they are gone, like Victora, Cassie, and etc. ??? They were all go for the show. I thought we would see Cassie grow in to a beautiful young lady and have all the ups and downs as we all have had in our lives? But you folks there do have a great and special soap as I have watched this since the first day of the show, I love the stars and hate some but it is the part thay play not the person in real life as I love all of them.
Thank you again for a great soap and keep up the good work. God bless all
