The Insider caught up with Marnie to ask her what she looks for when casting a role on "Y&R." "Above all, I look for talent - the natural instincts that an actor possesses," she said. "I look for those real gut instincts that separate the men from the boys." According to Marnie, the actor's physical appearance is less important that you might think. "Someone who you might not necessarily think is gorgeous can come in and be such a phenomenal talent, and studied and prepared, and all of a sudden he becomes incredibly sexy."
We'll have more from our talk with Marnie later...when she'll reminisce about the memorable audition of one of "Y&R"'s most popular actors!

Let me get this straight, fire Camryn so you can hire some beef cake? OK, maybe because I'm a guy, I don't care about some muscle bound hunk, but I'll be interested in where they put Mr. Beefcake. Maybe this is the guy who is gonna kill off Bobby (another shameful departure).
Here's a better idea: why not do something with Chancellor Industries? Now that Jack works there (though we've never seen him actually IN the building, and he IS the CEO, right?), this could open up a whole new batch of people who work there. Just a thought.
BTW, if my teenage daughter ever came home with a diamond stud in her nose, there would be hell to pay. Sorry, I'm a bit old fashioned, but I don't like it.

As the casting director, Ms. Saitta is pretty good at picking talented actors - seasoned ones like Drucilla, Jack, Phyllis, Neil, Jill, Michael, Damon, Victor, Malcom, Gloria, John, etc.... the list goes on and on.
Ms. Saitta, please continue choosing those very good actors, and continue limiting the talentless ones i.e. Christine, Bobby and Brittany to a minimum.

who got the role of the rock and role star?
Posted by: G at June 6, 2005 1:08 PM
Well, whatever you do please do not hire another "Gitta" type character.
I've seen Tuesday's episode and in all my years watching Y&R I have never seen a more ridiculous scene than that one with Gitta and Kevin. If I wanted to watch Passions I would.
If you are trying to inject some humor please bring back Laird the Wedding Planner, at least he's entertaining.

Marnie,
When casting for family members, are the looks and similarities to existing actors a big factor?
I think Lily looks more like Malcolm's daughter than Neil's.Did you know ahead of time she'd be Malcolm's?
Posted by: CC at June 6, 2005 4:50 PM
why do they keep changing the part pf mackenzi?
Posted by: Peggie at June 6, 2005 6:01 PM
Fire Camryn. Let John Enos go supposedly for budgetary reasons but audition of new cast members? What are the people in charge thinking? If they want to know why Y&R is losing viewers just look at what is going on with casting.
Posted by: SNP at June 6, 2005 8:31 PM
If Y&R is beset by budgetary problems why not kill off Victor? The character has become a bore and cutting loose EB would certainly save the show a bundle and increase ratings.

Are they looking for a new person to replace JT?
I hear he might have his own show. I think he
is adorable and real truly miss him if he is the one they are going to replace.

Whats With Ashley lately - shes snobbish,
and I'm really getting sick of her.
why not dump her!!!!
If not at least get her back w/ Brad, even though she does not deserve him.
And Bradley needs a woman - but not Sharon!!!
c'mon... LO

any new men for her on the horizon? And what about Ester & Miguel? He's not half bad looking..

What is the deal with Camryn? Is he really off the show? He could have shined a whole new light of drama on Y&R if given the chance. Why was he given the weak roles and then fired (if he is off the show)? This routine drama with the Newmans is becoming a bore.
Posted by: Tammy at June 7, 2005 11:11 AM
Marnie,
You've done such a great job casting the characters of Y&R...I love the casting choices of Gloria, Kevin, Terrible Tom , Daniel, and I think superstitious Gitta is a hoot.
Heres my criticism: Mac.
What happened with Mac? Thad Luckinbill and Greg Rikaart are both charismatic fine actors but with this new Mac, I can't remember her name, the scenes are dullsville. The triangle lost what made it compelling. Shy, serious, lovelorn Mac is gone and in her place is a stranger who likes to eat chocolate mousse with some tall blonde guy. Whoo hoo I'm glad I tuned in for this.
Posted by: Jude at June 7, 2005 2:16 PM
I am tried of all the repeated sex with everyone if they stay long enough.
I think your program would better if you up the character of the actors.
Your Mac's have changed so much, until I have lost interest in her. I liked the Brock character.
Michael and Kevin are great actors. I like Mike because you have cleaned him up with more character.
You have presented Sharon as a nice Lady, but a dog that is never real happy with her self and as a easy Prowl. She has no interest in her home, all is the same. your show only has the Coffee Shop as a place for the teens to go and Victors Place. That would get boring.
I used to like Bobby, but you have messed up him already in that, he as a mature man would never be satisfied with Brit.

Since we are here discussing Casting, I hope that you will not mind if I tell you that, in Addition to the Late Miss Cassie Newman, my other Favourite Character is one who admittedly seems to be rather unpopular, Mrs. Mary Williams. Yes, I join those who feel that she is quite meddlesome, and, similar to "Highness" on _The_ _Bold_ _And_ _The_ _Beautiful_, can sometimes be a little evil, though hopefully not as extremely so as "Queen Stephanie." Yet, despite this, I personally find her to be a _LADY_, only one of a few of which this admitted maverick can say that (at her Best, Mrs. Nikkie Newman is another). Again at the Risk of "swimming upstream," I personally do not usually enjoy American Slang and Colloquial Language, and Mrs. Williams seems to rarely, if ever, use it! She is thus, for me, a Proverbial Breath of Fresh Air _DESPITE_ being excessively meddlesome, etc.! Yet she seems to mean well. I am _MOST_ pleased that she was not killed off, and would obviously welcome being able to hear from her again. Yet I realize that she does not figure in what is now going on, and thus I am not upset concerning her long Absence. Though this is _MUCH_ belated (since I only learned of the Insider within the past couple of Weeks), might I please extend Best Wishes to Miss Carolyn Conwell on the Occasion of her Birthday, and otherwise wish her well, particularly as it involves her Golf and Singing (I also wish I could hear her do that along with Miss Bregman).
Should I again renew my Fan-Club Membership (now not a Sure Thing), Miss Christine Blair would replace La Cassie as one of my Favourite Characters since I feel she, and Miss Bell's Acting, have been given "Short Shrift," though _THANKFULLY_ now not as much as once was the Case! Did she not do _SUPERBLY_ in her Scenes Yesterday?

The casting dept. is quite good overall, especially in finding a great actor like Greg Rikaart. I also think some of the extras/small parts look talented; for example, the girl who waited on the Michael and Lauren characters in the "casino." But I wonder how many posters and letter writers (one assumes) it will take before you realize - whether or not anything can/will be done - how LOUSY an actress both the new Victoria and new McKenzie are. Not that recasts can't happen and a character look/act differently; this has been the case - successfully - with Judith Chapman replacing Joan Van Ark as Gloria. The new Mac and J.T. do look good together but she's a stuntwoman, not an actress! She has NO range whatsoever. The previous actress was terribly, too. You could send McKenzie off the canvas for a while and no one would miss her.
On another brief topic: on 6/8 U.S. espisode, why do Malcolm and Lily talk about "a place where the police can't (so far) find Daniel? Since the bail hearing hasn't happened yet, he isn't missing yet, right? Hello?? Anyone on your show being paid a salary for continuity?

STOP WITH THE "BRING BACK CASSIE" ALREADY! She's gone, get over it, folks. I was not happy with it either, but that's where the show decided to go, so that's that. I still wish the death of Rex was all a dream, but that didn't happen either, did it?
As for casting, I too must agree with other posts regarding Mac. Yes, the shy, lovelorn Mac is gone, and in her place is some chick who has the hots for JT. Mac would NEVER make herself that "easy." Also, this one looks a bit older than the other Mac(s).
How about casting a new Billy, bring him back to have him tell Mac she is crazy for falling for JT, and then blow the whistle on Jill so that Kay fires her and Jack hires Victoria. You want to stir the pot on that show? Put Victoria in at Jabot. Now there are some fireworks!

And what ever happened to Lauren's son......Scotty??

There are lots of missing kids:
Nate Hastings
Kyle Jenkins/Abbott
Victor Newman Jr. (I know he's in Kansas with Hope, but someday he has to be curious about his roots. Let's rapid age him to 22 and have him come to claim his rightful place at N.E.)
Scotty Grainger - let's see if he comes to his mom's wedding
Billy Abbott - we could at least mention him when his dad almost dies or events happen in the lives of his siblings
I miss Ashley Bashioum (sp?) as Mackenzie - the cat fight the new Mackenzie had with Brittany was so boring I almost passed out. They used to have such evil chemistry.
Posted by: Amy HIllgren at June 9, 2005 8:04 PM
When will you be creating the scene where the police interview the kids at the dance who spoke with Cassie, when she said she was going to drive Daniel home? That's evidence that needs to be heard. Plus the fact that Cassie told her father. Such anger from Nick when he knows the truth. It just doesn't seem real.

I have been silent for the last few days watching the whole "post Cassie" days unfold. I must say, I am truly displeased with the way the show is going right now.
I think it was the worst decision any producer could have made. I have watched for the last few years, Cassie growing up on the show. I became emotionally entwined with the character. In a way I feel like I grew up with Cassie even though I am four years older than the character.
I find myself aggreeing with others that have posted comments. Bring her back, find a way to resolve this whole thing. The fans will be much happier when the character returns to the show. Even the people that don't believe in bringing back a dead character can get over it in time. The majority of Y&R followers loved the character of Cassie Newman, and it would not hurt the show one bit. I find it hard to sleep at night just thinking of the pain that the family is going through. I know that pain, I have seen all to much. It really hit close to home killing off the character of Cassie.
Even if you dont bring back the character of Cassie, for gods sake give her her own show. Camryn is one of the best actresses i have seen in along time. Give her, her own show and I am sure that the young and the restless faithfull will embrace the show.
If you don't do something about this situation, I don't know if I could continue to watch the show, it hurts to much to think of Cassies death. I hope you find a way to ressolve this situation before you loose to many viewers over the Cassie situation.

If they want to replace JT, they could cast Anthony Federov from "American Idol" as his little brother. He looks like he could be Thad Luckinbill's real-life brother.
Posted by: Larry at June 11, 2005 10:12 PM
There's no need to replace Thad Luckinbill, he's
one of the best actors on daytime. I'm hoping
TPTB realize they dodged a bullet when ABC did
not pick up "Bobby Cannon." Now they need to
re-sign Thad, give him a good storyline, bump him
up from supporting player to leading man and
hopefully bring on at least one family member for
J.T. to play off of. It's frustrating that the
character of J.T. has been on the show six years
and we've never seen his family. I bet if done
properly the Hellstroms could be just as
dysfunctional as the Fisher-Baldwin clan has
proven to be.

Speaking of casting, Judith Chapman is really great (too bad TV Guide, in next week's issue talking about soap recasts, doesn't think so.) Anyway,I started wondering today (6/13) if really great story is planned for her. A friend of mine who also watches the show pointed out that Gloria made a call on her cell phone at about the same time Ashley heard Terrible Tom's cell phone ringing! First we wondered if they've been in cahoots all along?? But then I wondered, maybe Gloria did lure him to town - and that was her Tom was talking to last - Friday - but that Gloria's plan overall will be to "gaslight" him; maybe hoping John Abbott will die, leave her his fortune; she'll entice Tom in and then: something bad will happen to Tom? Revenge? Well, this could be farfetched! Whatever plot happens, my friend and I will be watching; we love all the Baldwin-Fishers; best thing on the show!

I can not begin to explain my thoughts of the last weeks happenings. I hope that Nick wont do anything and stay and comfort Sharron.
But with the irresponsible writers that have started this whole thing, you never know whats going to happen. They have already killed off Cassie, whats stopping them from getting rid of Nick or even Sharron. Where does it end? I can not respect a writers that come in a change everything the original writers started. For the most popular soap opera on daytime television, they did not need any of this to happen. It was these writers that decided not to renew Camryns contract last year, but to keep her as a special guest until they had a chance to get rid of her. So don't give me that crud everyone is trying to shove down our throats that something needed to happen. That is untrue. Nothing needed to happen. The show in Camryns last years was recieving the highest ratings the show has ever recieved. You need to find a way to fix this or you can forget about the show going another five years. You don't kill off everyones favorite little girl. It irressponsible and it is stupid. FIX IT!!!
Posted by: Ben Phillips at June 15, 2005 10:20 AM
Adding new actresses for Mac and Victoria so closely together has made it really difficult to remember which character is supposed to be which girl. They don't resemble the previous characters at all. The new Mac simply does not have an innocent virgin look at all. In fact she looks weathered and experienced, and she can't fake otherwise. The new Victoria is hard to accept, too, considering the other Victoria had been there so long. When those two characters come on I find myself tuning out and bored. I just can't get used to them both at the same time.

This is my first time posting a comment and I thoroughly enjoy reading the posts; such anger over a fictitious story. I've been watching Y&R for a number of years and I'm truly bored with just about every storyline, with the exception of Lauren and Michael. I think Phyllis's character is awesome. Since Y&R is working on casting new Actors/Actresses and you really want to stir things up, how about casting more African Americans? I know the Winters family isn’t the ONLY African Americans in ALL of Genoa City. I’ll continue to watch and hope it improves.

I do not know whether or not anyone else other than myself is still looking at this Thread, but if you are, Poster Ben Phillips, are you telling us that what we have been hearing about Miss Grimes's Contract being due to expire next March is actually false, or was that Contract the one whereby she was to appear as a Guest? Unfortunately your Post seems to ring true since Miss Newman was appearing rather spottily before her Death. Thus could she _INDEED_ have been appearing as a Guest until such Time as the Writers decided what to do about her? Yet we maybe should believe the Part about her not wishing to remain beyond the End of her Current Contract, whether or not as Guest, so could that Decision have been prompted by what the Writers were doing to her, that is if your Story is accurate? I am inclined to think we probably should believe the Part about her Character's Death taking her by Surprise, whether or not the Guest Business is true. Whatever is actually the Case, we probably will not, apart from Flashbacks, hear from her again on this Programme, and it does appear that she really did not want to remain, whether or not this resulted from what the Writers, etc., were doing to her. Maybe we will never know what really happened in all Aspects, though I somehow hope that we eventually will.

Posted by: J. Vaughan at June 19, 2005 2:09 AM
Yes the story of Camryn's contract being terminated last year is true, the studio has confirmed it. I am now working directly with parts of the studio so I hear things from time to time. She was to remain as a guest until the writers figured out what to do with her. The original agreement was to keep her as a guest until next year, but soon after william Bells death it was changed, and so they got rid of her this year. But yes she was very shocked to find out that her contract was terminated earlier than she originally thought. There are however deals being made to possibly give her, her own show in the near future. Don't quote me on that, it is pure rumor at this point.

Thank you _VERY_ much, Poster Ben Phillips, for your _EVIDENTLY_-Perceptive and, it would seem, Well-Informed Accounting of what happened as you have come to know it!!! The Matter of Miss Grimes having her own Programme has been mentioned on this Board, probably as a Hope, and I for one hope this Rumour turns out _NOT_ to be a Rumour, and that her Programme, if given her, will prove worthwhile to _ALL_ of us!!!
I know of no Prohibition on this Board against giving one's E-Mail Address publically, and I _REALLY_ wish I could give it to you, Poster Ben Phillips!!! Yet Prudence must unfortunately prevail in these Days of Foul Doings on the Internet, and thus I must _RELUCTANTLY_ refrain from doing so here.

I have not yet read the Spoilers for this Week, but _HOPEFULLY_ Miss Hodges will not need to resort to that extreme a Measure to protect herself and her Baby. Yet these Characters with whom Mr. Marsino is regretably aligned evidently mean _BUSINESS_, so one can probably understand why, if she did, Miss Hodges resorted to that Measure (I gather we might find out on Wednesday) without necessarily agreeing with it. As I feel rather certain I have written elsewhere on the Insider Boards, I would _VERY_ much welcome the Re-Union of Mr. Hellstrom with Miss Carlton!!!

After reading the previous coments, I'm happy to find so many viewers feel as I do about the current cast and story lines. WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO Y&R? cassie's character had run it's course, she just wasn't the same cute kid anymore.
sharon should leave next. She gives young mother hood a black eye. she hasn't been satisfied since day one, and I was there for day one. Let her see how lucky she has it or write her off. the morals of Y&R are starting to resemble those of your other show, B&B. maybe Bill Bell, jr. is putting his 2 cents into this show? I hope not. I first started seeing a moral change when you brought back Michael B's. character for a second chance. I understand why you did it, because the actor was so good, and he added a lot of fire to the very flat Christine's character and it gave the very plain Paul Williams some conflict, but must we condone the whole disfunctional family?
Must every person in the family start their roles as mean, deceiving, money hungry people all going after some unsuspecting decent person, only to have the whole cast help them redemm themselves for the next unbearable months? Maybe it's time to add some new blood to your writing staff instead of your cast. I got through the Kevin character's rebirth after he took advantage of Lilly, after he tried to kill Brad's daughter and burn down Gina's restaurant, and endangered Lauren's life, but then you added Gloria to the Abbot clan by marrying this seemingly intellegent man John Abbot. Did you want us to think he was so stupid or just Horney? Either way, it seems like you'll throw anything you can to just feel the hour. At first I thought the joke was over when Ashley and Jack found out who her sons were, but then you have that accident, yet another attempt to redemm Kevin and make us like him, Please. Unfortunately for me , a true Y&R viewer from day one, you have gone too far with the disgusting TOM FISHER. Aside from finding him hard to look at and even harder to listen too (sorry actor playing this part but your just not appealing) I feel that there may not be any turning back for your show. The fact that you have him fooling Ashley and Paul who were so smart in suspecting Gloria, now being fooled by her ex-husband, well that's not only not believable it's insulting to the viewers. In fact, this whole family is just plan distasteful on every count. If my long time relationship is to end (THIS COULD VERY WELL BE THE CHARACTER AND STORY LINE TO CUT THE CORD).
Please writers of Y&R, stand back and look what you have brought to Geneoa City and to your faithfull audience. I watch to be entertained, not disgusted. Even if everyone is discovered for who they really are, the process of getting there is not worth watching and giving our daily time too. Think about it. You guys made the mistake on B&B when you fired Taylor's character and allowed the slut from hell (Brooke) to stay and destroy everyone's lives. Too bad Mr. Bell didn't get to see the upside her character has brought back to that show. Don't make the same mistake. In the end, your show influences many people, and you have a responsiblity to do what is right. This isn't porn, although you have had a few actors from that seedy world, this is DAYTIME DRAMA, and we allow you into our homes, and there are just some people who aren't welcome, either in person or on T.V. GET IT?

John Enos Bobby and Camryn Grimes Cassie were let to to bring aboard "SHEILA" kimberlin BROWN She even got a CONTRACT!!!!!!!
Posted by: nancy at July 6, 2005 10:18 AM
If Kimberlin Brown lasts longer than Bobby/John Enos, I will be very upset. The Bobby/Brittany storyline could have been an amazing thing - reminiscent of young Victor/Nikki if Bobby came into money somehow. But no, it had to get really, really stupid.
Please, please kill Ashley. An earlier poster said the Cassie character had run its course. I disagree. If it was flat for the moment, send her to Swiss boarding school like you did for Nick and Victoria (and Scotty, Nate, Kyle, Heather, and all the other missing GC kids). If you don't want to kill Ashley, have her flake out again and go to an asylum or spa.
Bring back Victor Newman, Jr. and he and rapid-aged Abby could be the new Newman kids, along with Noah.
I have to admit I think the Scott-Michael-Lauren storyline will be great and would be that way without stupid Sheila. She bugged me 10 years ago, I never thought she was attractive in any way and I hated her personality and she does not act well enough to be ruthless and evil. We have Phyllis and Jack - let them do what they do best. Give Jill her teeth back.
